The Kerala State Literacy Mission is set to receive Central funds for literacy and continuing education that had been discontinued nine years ago. This was decided at a meeting that mission director P.S. Sreekala had with Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar and Union School Education and Literacy secretary Reena Ray.
Ms. Sreekala attended the meeting, to discuss a new literacy scheme, on a special invite from the Union government. Ms. Ray said at the meeting that the State was being specially invited on the directions of the Niti Aayog. The Niti Aayog had directed the Union government to discuss its new literacy scheme with Kerala and make the State’s literacy and continuing education project a model.
When the State literacy mission was set up, it received both State and Central funding.
In 2009, the Union government stopped giving funds to the State mission. The State’s projects for marginalised sections were a model, the meeting said.
